Can you tailor an oversized trench coat?
I often get questions on whether coats can be altered from regular to petite sizing. Fact of the matter is almost anything can be altered if you have a skilled tailor and unlimited budget.

- Cross buckled end over opposite tip.
- Fold underneath, then over (like you’re tying a tie).
- Pull belt through back of knot.
- Finally, feed through loop you’ve made in the front.
- Pull to tighten.
Can a trench coat be shortened?
Trench coats can usually be made smaller in the torso and shortened by 5-8 percent (not inches – think 3 inches at most). They rarely can be made larger, as excess fabric is not usually sewn in.
Is my trench coat too big?
Trench coats are tailored garments so you should be able to comfortably button it around your waist. If you’re not able to close the coat, it’s best to go up a size to get the right fit. On the other side, avoid trench coats that are too big around the waist.
Can a tailor make a trench coat smaller?
Coats are somewhat complicated structurally. This item of clothing has a lining, padding, seams, stiffening and collar. However, an expert tailor will have no problem making the alterations you desire. Keep in mind that shortening the length of the coat, sleeves or collar is fairly simple.

- Gather the fabric along the side seams of the jacket until it is pulled to your desired size.
- Remove the jacket and lay it still inside out on a flat surface.
- Cut away excess fabric along the new seam to complete the alteration.
- Use a seam ripper to separate the lining from the sleeves.

What to do if your coat is too big?
Run the washing machine on the hottest water setting and longest cycle time. You do not need to use detergent to shrink your jacket. Just run the washing machine with plain water. Polyester generally takes more exposure to heat to shrink, whereas cotton can shrink after just one wash cycle.
